Spiritual Repotting: 3 Ways to Deepen Your Gratitude Practice

When a plant outgrows its pot, it doesn't mean anything is wrong with the plant. In fact, it's a sign that it's healthy and growing.
The same is true for us.
Sometimes we outgrow the beliefs, routines, and spiritual practices that once served us. What helped us a year ago may not be what we need today. Growth asks us to create more space—to "repot" ourselves, making room for new perspectives, deeper awareness, and continued transformation.
That's the inspiration behind my Spiritual Repotting series, where I repot my houseplants while exploring ways to expand our spiritual practices and cultivate more intentional lives.
Today's topic is one that almost everyone has heard of: gratitude.

Is your gratitude practice stuck in the same pot?
Many people end their day by writing a list of things they're grateful for:
My family.
My dog.
My home.
My health.
There's nothing wrong with this practice. Gratitude journaling has been shown to support emotional well-being, improve mood, and help us notice the good that's already present in our lives.
But over time, many of us start writing the same list every day. The practice becomes routine instead of transformational. If that's happening, it doesn't mean gratitude isn't working - it may simply mean your practice has outgrown its current container.
Here are three simple ways to breathe new life into your gratitude practice.
GO DEEPER THAN THE OBJECT
Instead of writing "I'm grateful for my dog," ask yourself: Why?
Maybe you're grateful because your dog makes you laugh after difficult days.
Maybe they remind you to slow down and appreciate the present moment.
Maybe they offer unconditional love when you need it most.
When you explore why something matters, gratitude shifts from a mental exercise to an emotional experience.
PRACTICE GRATITUDE IN THE PRESENT MOMENT
Gratitude doesn't only belong in a journal.
Notice it throughout your day.
Feel the warmth of your morning tea.
Pause during a walk to appreciate the breeze through the trees.
Take a slow breath before rushing to your next task.
The more we practice gratitude in real time, the more naturally it becomes part of who we are instead of something we remember to do before bed.
FIND GRATITUDE IN THE CHALLENGE
This one isn't about pretending difficult experiences are enjoyable.
It's about asking:
What is this experience teaching me?
Sometimes challenges strengthen our boundaries.
Sometimes they deepen compassion.
Sometimes they redirect us toward a path we never would have chosen on our own.
Finding meaning in difficult moments doesn't erase the pain—but it can help us move through it with greater resilience and perspective.

Growth requires new space
Just as fresh soil gives a plant room to spread its roots, expanding our spiritual practice creates space for deeper transformation. Maybe your gratitude practice doesn't need to be abandoned. Maybe it simply needs a bigger pot.
The practices that nourish us today may evolve tomorrow, and that's a beautiful sign of growth.
Spiritual growth through nature
Nature has always been one of my greatest teachers.
Whether I'm guiding a meditation, offering a Reiki session, leading a sound bath, or simply spending time outdoors, I'm reminded that growth isn't always fast or obvious. Sometimes it's happening beneath the surface, quietly strengthening our roots before anything blooms.
That's why I created the Spiritual Repotting series - to explore personal growth through the wisdom of nature, one conversation (and one plant) at a time.
