Can Reiki Help With Anxiety?

How Reiki can help with your anxiety from a seasoned Reiki Master

Anxiety does not live only in the mind.

It can show up as a tight chest, shallow breathing, tense shoulders, a racing heart, restless sleep, digestive discomfort, or the persistent feeling that something is wrong, even when you cannot explain why.

As a Reiki Master, I have seen how deeply anxiety can affect the physical, emotional, and energetic body. I have also witnessed the shift that can happen when someone is finally given a safe, quiet space to stop holding everything together.

While Reiki cannot erase every source of anxiety in one session, I have seen clients actively feel results after that one session. It can be a powerful tool for helping the body soften, calming an overwhelmed mind, releasing emotional tension, and supporting a deeper sense of balance.

For many people, Reiki feels like an exhale they did not realize they had been holding.

Anxiety Is More Than Worry

Occasional anxiety is a natural response to uncertainty, change, and stress. But when the nervous system remains on high alert, it can become difficult to feel safe, even during moments when no immediate danger is present.

Anxiety may feel like:

  • Thoughts that will not slow down

  • Constantly anticipating what could go wrong

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Feeling restless, irritable, or emotionally overwhelmed

  • Muscle tension or tightness in the chest

  • Trouble falling or staying asleep

  • Heart palpitations, trembling, or sweating

  • Nausea or digestive discomfort

  • Feeling disconnected from your body

  • A persistent sense of panic, fear, or impending danger

If you experience anxiety, you are far from alone.

The World Health Organization estimates that anxiety disorders affected approximately 470 million people worldwide in 2023, making them the most common mental disorders in the world. Yet only about one in four people who need treatment receive it.

In the United States, approximately 19.1% of adults experience an anxiety disorder in a given year, while an estimated 31.1% experience one at some point in their lifetime.

These numbers help demonstrate how many people are searching for support, not only through conventional mental health care, but also through complementary practices that address the body, mind, emotions, and energy as a whole.

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese energy-healing practice that supports balance within the body’s energetic system.

During a session, a trained Reiki practitioner serves as a conduit for universal life-force energy. With their hands placed lightly on or just above the body, the practitioner directs Reiki where it is most needed.

You remain fully clothed throughout the session. There is no physical manipulation, and you do not need to talk through your experiences unless you would like to.

Some people experience warmth, tingling, waves of energy, visual imagery, emotional release, or an almost dreamlike meditative state. Others experience deep stillness or simply feel more rested than they have in a long time.

There is no particular sensation you need to have for Reiki to be working. Reiki meets you where you are.

How Can Reiki Help With Anxiety?

From a Reiki perspective, anxiety can affect the flow of energy and energetic balance throughout the body. Fear, chronic stress, grief, trauma, uncertainty, and emotional overwhelm may leave us feeling energetically depleted, ungrounded, stuck, or overstimulated.

Reiki works gently with these imbalances. Rather than forcing the body to calm down, it creates the conditions in which the body can begin to soften in its own time. It reminds the body of what alignment naturally looks and feels like. From there, the body can begin to heal itself.

Here are some of the ways Reiki may support someone experiencing anxiety:

  1. Reiki creates space for deep rest

When you live with anxiety, true rest can feel surprisingly difficult.

You may lie down while your thoughts continue racing. You may try to meditate but become frustrated when your mind will not become quiet. Even during moments of physical rest, part of you may remain alert and prepared for the next problem.

A Reiki session asks nothing of you.

You do not have to clear your mind, concentrate on your breathing, explain your emotions, or achieve a particular state. You are simply invited to receive.

This makes Reiki especially approachable for people who want the benefits of a meditative experience but struggle with traditional meditation.

  1. Reiki can help calm mental and emotional overwhelm

Anxiety often pulls us away from the present moment and into imagined futures, worst-case scenarios, or repetitive thought loops.

Reiki can help draw your awareness back into the body and the present moment. As the session progresses, thoughts may begin to feel less urgent. The mind may become quieter, or you may feel as though there is more space between you and your worries.

The intention is not to fight your thoughts or force them to disappear. Instead, Reiki offers the mind a softer place to land.

  1. Reiki supports energetic balance

Anxiety can leave your energy feeling scattered, heavy, depleted, or stuck.

Through Reiki, we work with the energetic body, including the chakra system, to support greater balance and flow. Depending on the individual, a session may focus on grounding through the root chakra, softening emotional energy around the heart, supporting personal power through the solar plexus, or quieting mental activity around the upper chakras.

This is not a one-size-fits-all formula. Each person’s energetic experience is different, and Reiki flows according to what the recipient needs in that moment.

  1. Reiki can help you reconnect with your body

For someone living with anxiety, physical sensations can sometimes feel frightening.

A change in breathing, tightness in the chest, a fluttering heartbeat, or tension in the stomach may immediately trigger more worry. Over time, you may begin to feel disconnected from your body or view it as something unpredictable.

Reiki offers a gentle way to return to the body without judgment.

Rather than analyzing every sensation, you are invited to notice warmth, heaviness, softness, movement, or stillness. This can begin to create a more compassionate relationship with your physical body - one built around listening rather than fear.

  1. Reiki provides emotional and energetic support

Sometimes anxiety is connected to more than the present moment.

It may be intertwined with grief, trauma, major life changes, uncertainty, burnout, or emotions that have not had a safe place to move. Reiki can support the gentle release and processing of this emotional energy.

This does not mean every session will result in a dramatic emotional breakthrough. Healing can also look like taking a deeper breath, sleeping more peacefully, feeling lighter, or recognizing that you have been carrying more than you realized.

What Does Research Say About Reiki and Anxiety?

Although Reiki has been practiced for generations, scientific research into its effects is still growing. Existing findings are encouraging and reflect what many Reiki practitioners and recipients have experienced personally.

A 2024 meta-analysis examined 13 studies involving 824 adults and found that Reiki had a statistically significant effect on anxiety, with a standardized mean difference of −0.82. This is considered a relatively large overall effect.

Researchers found promising results in both adults with chronic health conditions and members of the general population. Benefits were observed in studies offering three or fewer sessions as well as those offering six to eight sessions.

A 2022 systematic review evaluated 14 randomized, placebo-controlled studies involving Reiki and mental health symptoms. The researchers rated the evidence supporting Reiki for clinically relevant anxiety as moderate to high. They concluded that incorporating Reiki as a complementary practice alongside mainstream psychotherapy for anxiety, stress, and depression may be appropriate.

In another randomized clinical trial, 122 participants were divided among massage-and-rest, massage-and-Reiki, and control groups. After eight sessions, the massage-and-Reiki group experienced a reported 33% reduction in stress, with a comparatively large effect size.

Research using fMRI has shown that Reiki increases activity in the left prefrontal cortex, an area linked to positive emotional states. This is why 15% (and growing) of US hospitals integrate Reiki into their medicine programs.

Research is still evolving, and larger studies will help us understand Reiki’s effects more fully.

But science is beginning to explore something Reiki practitioners and clients have described for years: this gentle practice can have a meaningful place in supporting relaxation, emotional well-being, and relief from anxiety.

What Does Reiki for Anxiety Feel Like?

Every Reiki experience is unique.

During a session, you might feel:

  • Warmth or tingling beneath the practitioner’s hands

  • A sense of energy moving through the body

  • Heaviness as the body settles into deeper rest

  • Lightness or spaciousness

  • Emotional release

  • A quieter mind

  • Vivid colors, memories, or imagery

  • A deeply meditative or dreamlike state

  • Grounded, calm, or more connected to yourself

You may also feel very little physically while still noticing a difference afterward.

Some clients leave feeling immediately lighter and more relaxed. Others notice that they sleep more deeply, respond differently to a stressful situation, experience greater emotional clarity, or feel more connected to their intuition in the following days.

Reiki does not need to be dramatic to be meaningful.

Can One Reiki Session Help Anxiety?

Many people feel calmer or more grounded after a single Reiki session. One session can provide a meaningful reset, especially during a stressful season or after an emotionally demanding experience.

However, anxiety often develops through accumulated stress, long-held emotional patterns, trauma, or ongoing life circumstances. For this reason, some people benefit from receiving Reiki consistently over time.

Western medicine and curreny culture has taught us to rely on quick, band-aid fixes. Most of the time, these fixes are just silencing the symptoms without actually targeting the source. With holistic healing, like Reiki, it can take several sessions to get to the root of the issue (in this case, anxiety).

A series of sessions allows you to observe patterns, build a stronger connection with your body, and continue working gently with the emotional and energetic layers beneath your anxiety.

There is no universal number of sessions required. Your needs, experiences, and healing process are your own.

Is Reiki a Replacement for Therapy or Medical Care?

Reiki can be a powerful part of a healing journey, but it does not have to replace other forms of support.

It can be used alongside therapy, medication, medical care, meditation, movement, and other wellness practices. These approaches do not need to compete with one another. Each may support a different layer of your well-being.

In fact, many therapists and mental health professionals encourage their clients to try Reiki as a complementary modality alongside therapy sessions.

Reiki practitioners do not diagnose anxiety disorders or prescribe treatment. If anxiety is persistent, worsening, causing panic attacks, or interfering with your daily life, a medical or mental health professional can help you explore appropriate treatment.

Seeking clinical support does not make your spiritual or energetic healing less valid. In the same way, choosing Reiki does not mean you are ignoring science or conventional care.

Healing can hold more than one truth and more than one form of support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Reiki heal anxiety?

Reiki may support the healing process by promoting relaxation, restoring energetic balance, and helping you reconnect with your body and emotions. Every person responds differently, and healing does not always mean that anxiety disappears completely. It may mean feeling more grounded, understanding your triggers, experiencing greater emotional ease, or having more internal resources when anxiety arises.

How quickly does Reiki work for anxiety?

Some people feel noticeably calmer during or immediately after their first session. For others, the effects unfold gradually over the following hours or days. People working through chronic anxiety, trauma, or prolonged stress may benefit from a series of sessions. In my experience as a Reiki Master, most clients feel effects even after one session.

What if my mind will not stop racing during Reiki?

That is completely okay. You do not have to empty your mind for Reiki to work. Thoughts may continue moving while your body begins to relax. Simply noticing your thoughts without fighting them can become part of the experience. My Reiki sessions start with a sound bath and guided meditation to help you relax and ease into healing, promoting a calmer and more relaxed state. However, you do not need to be devoid of anxiety or thoughts for Reiki to "work."

Do I have to believe in Reiki?

No particular religious or spiritual belief is required. You only need to be open to the experience. Some people understand Reiki as energy healing, while others experience it as meditative rest, intentional care, or a calming mind-body practice.

Can I receive Reiki while going to therapy or taking anxiety medication?

Yes. Reiki can be used as a complementary practice alongside therapy, medication, and medical care. Continue following the recommendations of your licensed providers, and speak with your prescriber before changing any medication.
